VISIT ÉVORA

Day trip Evora from Lisbon

The Day trip to Evora, we start at the city center. In Evora, all streets lead to Giraldo Square, Praça do Giraldo in Portuguese. It has been like this since its construction, in 1571/1573. This is where you will end up walking to. And where you will want to sit on a terrace and have a drink. Giraldo Square is an icon paying tribute to Fearless Geraldo Geraldes, the man who conquered Evora from the Moors in 1167. To thank him King Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, nominated him Governor of Evora (alcaide of Evora) and High Protector of the Borders of Alentejo, region which he would help to conquer.

VISIT TEMPLE DIANA ÉVORA

Monuments Evora day trip from Lisbon

We will continue our day tour visiting the Temple of Diana. The most famous tourist attraction of Evora is the Roman temple, incorrectly dedicated to Diana, the goddess of hunting. The temple is regarded as the best preserved Roman structure on the Iberian Peninsula, having been miraculously preserved by being incorporated into multiple buildings since the demise of the Romans. The Roman Temple of Evora is situated in the Largo Conde de Vila Flor square. The temple was constructed at the highest point of the city, so it is very easy to locate, just walk up hill. As the temple is the central feature of the square, it can be viewed at any time of the day and there is no entrance fee. The temple can be walked around but cannot be entered or climbed over, this means that visits are very brief

VISIT CHAPEL OF BONES ÉVORA

Chapel of Bones Tour Evora

Then we left to the Chapel of Bones. The Chapel of Bones in Évora, Portugal, is part of the larger Royal Church of St. Francis, and was constructed by Franciscan monks in the late 16th century. The Chapel’s story is a familiar one. By the 16th century, there were as many as 43 cemeteries in and around Évora that were taking up valuable land. Not wanting to condemn the souls of the people buried there, the monks decided to build the Chapel and relocate the bones. However, rather than interring the bones behind closed doors, the monks, who were concerned about society’s values at the time, thought it best to put them on display.

VISIT ÉVORA CATHEDRAL

visit Évora Cathedral

Our day continues by visiting Évora Cathedral. Évora's imposing cathedral (Sé Catedral de Évora) is situated in the very heart of the old city and the UNESCO World Heritage site. The oldest parts of the building date back to the 12th century, which was when the Moors were finally driven out by the Christians. As a consequence it is no coincidence that this mighty cathedral has certain aspects which resemble a fortress. Probably most people's first view of the cathedral is the façade which looks out over the Évora's main square. The rose granite façade consists of the main entrance portal over which is an impressive Gothic window with period tracery. This is flanked by two great towers which were added in the 16th century. Each tower has different decorative features, with one sporting a bells and a clock, and both topped by conical spires.

VISIT A WINE CELLAR

Visit of a production farm of Wines to its facilities and manufacturing process. In the distant past, during the final round of the 19th century, Évora enjoyed an unimaginable prestige, having been recognized as one of the most showy and admired sub-regions of Alentejo, the birthplace of many of the region's most coveted wines. It was necessary to wait until the end of the eighties of the last century to see the rebirth of Évora, the capital and an integral part of the central Alentejo. The landscape is dominated by brown Mediterranean soils, in a warm and dry landscape that is the cradle of some of the most prestigious wines in the Alentejo.
