Visit the Convent of St. Gonçalo On the way to Douro Wine region we visit Amarante and the Convent of St. Gonçalo. This Church, built in 1540 has a side portal with three levels of small Italian Renaissance columns and is crowned by a Baroque pediment. Near the portal, you will notice the statues of the four Kings who reigned during the period of the church's construction. The inside, remodelled in the 18C, houses a lovely piece of Baroque gilt-wood furniture and, more importantly, an organ case from the early 17C. In a chapel on the left you will find the tomb of St Gonzalve (who died in 1259).

Short break in Mesão Frio in Belvedere for panoramic photos A quiet town situated in the Douro demarcated wine region, Mesão Frio has always been linked to wine-making. The vines grow in terraces on the banks of the river, lending great beauty to the landscape, and dotted here and there are large estates and manor houses, most notably the Solar da Rede, which has been transformed into a Pousada.

Gateway to the Alto Douro, the sun-bleached town of Régua abuts the Rio Douro at the western edge of the demarcated port-wine region. As the region’s largest riverside town, it grew into a major port-wine entrepôt in the 18th century, and remains an important transport junction – thanks in part to the hulking IP3 bridge that soars overhead. The town itself, set along a busy highway above the river, doesn’t have a lot of charm. Most visitors stop in just long enough to visit the excellent Museu do Douro and get recommendations, maps and directions to nearby wineries. For those who linger, Régua makes a convenient base to visit the port-wine country, cruise the Rio Douro and take a scenic riverside train ride. Most tourists stick to the scenic riverfront, but the quaint old town one block uphill is an almost exclusively local scene, and well worth a wander.

Visit the Train Station of Pinhao The station received in 1937, the tile panels that still today make their fame. Are two dozen panels that cover almost all the walls of the main building and they are worth, whether the aesthetic point of view, whether historical, already missing because they represent aspects of the Douro Wine Region. Accurately illustrate traditional costumes and various aspects of traditional Douro vintage. Beautiful Azulejos depicting scenes from the wine harvest indicate this is the epicenter of Port wine land. The fact they were manufactured in Aveiro only attests to the standardization of these train stations – within a few centrally defined models, many variations were achieved and this gave a wonderful sense of aesthetic unity to such a basic act as traveling on a train.

The Douro Valley is home to the River Douro, the third largest river in the Iberian Peninsula, which runs for eight hundred and ninety seven kilometers from the Spanish town of Duruelo de la Sierra to Porto, Portugal's second city. For one hundred and twelve kilometers the river forms part of the border between Spain and Portugal. In the past, impassable canyons formed a barrier against marauding armies. Today this wild and beautiful frontier landscape is protected by the authority of the Douro Internacional Park.

The Douro Valley wine region is an area of northeastern Portugal with more than 26 thousand hectares, UNESCO, on December 14, 2001, as a World Heritage Site in the category of cultural landscape and surrounded by mountains give mesological characteristics and particular weather. The Douro Wine Region Valley, up to Barca de Alva, is the oldest demarcated wine region in the world. First, the river carved the deep valleys out of the land and then Man transformed the schist mountains into soil and walls and planted the vines, green in summer, flame-coloured in autumn. It was from the fruits of the land and Man’s labour that this unique wine and landscape were made.
